Charles William Underwood, III, 75, of Westminster, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, passed on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at the Long View Healthcare Center in Manchester. Born March 21, 1947, he was the son of the late Charles W. Underwood, II, and Eunice Underwood, nee Sharpe. He was the devoted husband of 28 years to Ann Underwood. They lived a full, fun life in Denver for 20 years. In May of 2008, they moved to Maryland to be near Ann’s family.
In 1965, Charles quit school and joined US Navy to support his mother and other family members. He served as Boilerman 1965-1968 on board the Destroyer USS Robison. Three tours to Viet Nam included action on the Saigon River & the Tonkin Gulf, as well as The Mekong Delta, South China Sea and the TET Offensive. Charles received three medals: National Defense Service Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal with device. He was an E4 - Boilerman Insignia with Chevron. After Viet Nam, Charles had various jobs and settled on roofing and carpentry.
Surviving in addition to his wife is daughter Darlene Holt (Teri Mantooth); stepsons, Chris Bild, and Joel Underwood; 9 grandchildren; two sisters, Patti Puailoa of California, and Arletta Bechtold of Nebraska. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Kirsten Brown.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, P.A., 91 Willis Street, Westminster, MD 21157. A graveside service will follow to Meadow Branch Cemetery in Westminster.
