Charles L. “Charlie” Long, 86, of Emmitsburg, died peacefully on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Frederick Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born December 30, 1931 in Loys Station, MD, he was the son of the late Theodore R. Long and the late Ethel (Long) Fout. He was the devoted husband of Dolly E. (Reed) Long, to whom he was married for 65 years.
Charles was an electrician with Reaves Electric and D.L. George Construction, and was later self-employed for many years. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army. Charles was a member of the Masonic Tyrian Lodge #205 of Emmitsburg, MD, and was a long-time member of Elias Evangelical Lutheran Church in Emmitsburg, where he served many years on the church council, on various church committees, as President and Treasurer of the Sunday School and as a Sunday School teacher, along with his wife Dolly. Charles enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and working in his trade helping others. He will be remembered by his devoted and longtime friends Mark Zurgable and Larry Bishop, as well as his many other local friends. He will be especially missed by his BEST friend, his sheltie, Molly B.
Surviving are his son, Douglas E. Long and wife Nancy of Charleston, SC, his daughter Peggy Long Stitely and husband Gene of Thurmont, MD, and his daughter-in-law Kathi Purks of Frederick, MD; grandchildren, Scot Stitely and wife Mandy, Allison Hardy and husband Teer, David Stitely and friend Victoria Luciani and Ashley Long and friend Justin Nusbaum; and great-grandchildren, Lillian and Logan Stitely and Camden and Nora Hardy. He is also survived by a sister, Ladean Martin; brothers, Robert Long and Ralph Long; and many cousins, nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by two brothers Richard Long and James Long, and grandson Brent Michael Stitely.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Elias Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 W. North Ave., P.O. Box 465, Emmitsburg, MD, 21727, with the Rev. Jon R. Greenstone officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Cemetery in Thurmont. The family will receive friends 2 - 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25th at Elias Lutheran Church, with a Masonic Memorial service being conducted at 7:30.
