Charles G. Leppo

Charles G. Leppo, 92, formerly of Westminster, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at Homewood at Plum Creek in Hanover, Pa.

Born Sept. 29, 1920, in Eastview, he was the son of the late Claude and Estella Lockard Leppo. He was the husband of LuRay Boerner Leppo, who died Oct. 5, 2012.

He was raised on a farm and worked the fields. He drove teams of horses, hunted, and worked winters cutting railroad ties and fire wood.

In 1941 he joined the Maryland Guard, chemical warfare section. He joined the Army in January 1942 and served four years in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a gunnery sergeant in the field artillery in the 77th Division.

He retired from Baltimore Gas & Electric Company after more than 30 years. He also worked for Dick Matthews, Esskay Meats, Beacon Steel, and as a driver for Carroll Hall Community Rehabilitation Program.

He was a life member of American Legion Post 200 in Hampstead, where he served as past commander and past county commander and was a past trustee of Carroll Lutheran Village from 1987 until 1993. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Snydersburg, and a past volunteer at Hampstead Fire Department.

He enjoyed gardening, carpentry, the outdoors and helping others.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law Carolyn and Tom Gordon Jr., of Westminster, Donna and Larry Sharp, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Gina and Russell Beeg, of Reno, Nev.; grandchildren Tom Gordon III and wife Brianna, Carrie Goughneour and husband Richmond, Christopher Serio, Carly Beeg, Jack Beeg, Barbara Sharp Moore and husband Chris, and John Sharp; and great-grandchildren, Madelyne and Christopher Moore.

He was predeceased by brothers Auldon, C. Albert, C. Oliver, Darrell, and Ronald Leppo; and sisters Emily Gesell and Almeda Bitzel.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster; and from 10 a.m until the time of service, 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1616 Cape Horn Road, Hampstead, with the Rev. Michael C. Adams officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at the Snydersburg Cemetery.
