Betty J. Bitzel Mikesell

October 27, 1923 — June 15, 2015

Betty J. Bitzel Mikesell, 91, formerly of Hanover, PA, died early Monday morning, June 15, 2015 at St. Catherine’s Nursing Center in Emmitsburg, MD.  Born October 27, 1923 in Union Mills, she was the daughter of the late Edward S. and Gertie E. Sterner Hollinger and the step-daughter of the late M. Minerva Hollinger.  She was predeceased by her husbands, William L. “Norman” Bitzel in 1988 and Burnell A. Mikesell in 2004.

Betty worked as a Final Inspector at L. Grief Company, (now English American) retiring in 1988.  She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post 467 and Keymar Evangelical Christian Church.  She enjoyed reading, playing Bingo and shopping.  She also volunteered at the Dutch Picnic in Smallwood and was an avid Orioles fan.

Surviving her are sons, Edward L. Bitzel and wife, Debra, of Taneytown and Dennis E. Bitzel and wife, Sherry, of Westminster; step-children, Dwight A. Mikesell and wife, Jane, of Bethlehem, PA and Karen O. Adkins and husband, Ronald, of Hanover, PA; sister, Vivian A. Seipp and husband, Robert, of Westminster and brother, Marvin S. Hollinger and wife, Janet, of Westminster; grandchildren, Michelle, Chad, Tony and Jason; and numerous great-grandchildren,  great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.  She was also predeceased by her brothers, Raymond and Eugene Hollinger and Guy Wolf.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, June 19, 2015 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St, Westminster, MD with the Reverend Dwight Mikesell officiating.  Burial will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM and on Friday from 10 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to St. Joseph’s Ministries/St. Catherine’s, 331 S. Seton Avenue,  Emmitsburg, MD  21727.
