Bertha Dutterer King Shankland

Bertha Dutterer King Shankland, age 102, of Daytona Beach, Florida, formerly of Silver Run, Maryland died October 6, 2011 in Florida. Born May 24, 1909 in Silver Run, she was the daughter of the late Alvin and Ada Bowersox Dutterer. She was the wife of the late Rev. Louis M. King, to whom she was married for 27 years and subsequently to the late Claude Shankland.
Rev. and Mrs. King served 16 Evangelical and Reformed churches over a period of 25 years. Following Rev. King’s death in 1956, she worked in Palm Beach, Florida. She married Claude Shankland in 1963, and the couple retired to Florida two years later. She was a member of Union Congregational Church in Holly Hill, Florida. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, needlework, cooking, baking, playing the organ and working for the church.
Surviving are daughter, Jeanne L. King of Daytona Beach, FL; sisters-in-law, Ruth M. and Mary Katherine Dutterer of Hanover, PA, and Frances Dutterer of New Oxford, PA; and 17 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by infant son, Harry Alvin King; nephew, Richard Horner; and all nine of her siblings, brothers Harry, John, Alvin, Jr., Sterling, Ralph, Stanley and Merwyn Dutterer, and sisters, Edna Plunkert and Emma Horner.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, October 13 at St. Mary’s United Church of Christ, 1441 E. Mayberry Rd., Silver Run, MD with the Reverend Dr. Richard Scott officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Silver Run. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
