Bernice Johnston Culver, 84, of Taneytown, MD, died Friday, January 10, 2025, at Bridging Life Hospice in Westminster. Born June 22, 1940, in Carroll County, she was the daughter of the late Howard Ray and Emma Louise Rumbold Johnston.
Bernice was a graduate of Westminster High School in 1958, Church Home & Hospital School of Nursing and studied painting at The Carnegie Institute. She taught nursing until 1966 and worked at the Carroll County Health Department for more than 15 years. In addition, Bernice was a nationally recognized waterfowl and bird carver who taught classes and garnered multiple world championships over her career of more than 35 years. She was a member of Kiwanis of Greater Westminster and was active in local churches as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, lector, and Eucharistic ministry. As an avid bird watcher and advocate, she cofounded the Carroll Vista Bird Club and Carroll County Carvers, for both of which she served as president.
Bernice will be dearly missed by her son, Bruce Culver and his wife, Robin of New Windsor, MD; siblings, Bradley Johnston of Asheville, NC, and Jeanne Bass of Westminster, MD, and grandchildren, Chase Culver of Littleton, CO and Asa Culver of Tempe, AZ. Bernice was preceded in death by her sister, Janice Smith.
Family will receive friends from 12 to 2p.m., Friday, January 31, 2025. Memorial service will be private. Condolences may be made online at myersdurborawfh.com.
