Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, revered teacher, friend, musician, and volunteer,
Barbara Ann Donachy Patterson passed peacefully on April 5, 2023. Born on July 9, 1937, in Charleston, West Virginia, daughter of Ann Louise Donachy and John Samuel Donachy.
Barbara is a graduate of Shenandoah Conservatory, Dayton, VA, class of 1960, and West Virginia University School of Music, Morgantown, W. VA, obtaining a Masters of Music in 1965. Barbara was an instrumental music teacher in Newport News-Hampton Virginia for four years, and Carroll County Maryland for 30 years retiring on July 1, 1997. Barbara was involved as a musician locally in the Carroll County Choral Arts Society, William F. Myers Band, Carroll Concert Band, Carroll County Jazz Ensemble, Sunday Night Big Band, The Never Too Late Band, and the Bell Choir, Adult Choir, and Spirit Band at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ Westminster, MD. Barbara was recognized by the Maryland Music Educators Association with the Award of Excellence for the Western Region March 5, 1988, by Carroll County Public Schools for 30 Years of Service July 1, 1997, and by Shenandoah Conservatory, Winchester VA, where she was inducted into the Dayton Alumni Hall of Fame in April, 2020. In addition to her musical talents, Barbara was an award-winning photographer, an avid crafter, and a devoted volunteer at Access Carroll.
She was happiest when spending time with her family, especially with her four grandchildren. Barbara is survived by her Husband Glenn William Patterson, Westminster, MD, Daughter Lori Ann True and Son-in-Law Erik True, Sykesville, MD, Son Glenn William Patterson II and Daughter-in-Law Meg Patterson, Charles Town, W VA, Granddaughters’ Sophie True and Mischa True, Sykesville, MD, Brenna Patterson, Charles Town, W VA, and grandson Reid Nathaniel Patterson of Charles Town, W VA, sister Mary Susan McClaskey and nephews Patrick McClaskey and Michael McClaskey of Charlotte, NC, and Sister-in-Law Gypsy Kay Donachy. She was predeceased by brother John Monteer Donachy, sister Martha Jane Donachy, and step-brother Edward Eldridge Donachy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Access Carroll, 10 Distillery Drive, Suite 200, Westminster, MD, Kahlert Regional Cancer Center, 291 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD and Dove House Hospice Center, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD. A Celebration of Life and Reception will be held on Saturday, June 3, at 1:00 at Wesley Freedom UMC in Sykesville, MD.
