B. Winifred Polkinghorne

B. Winifred Polkinghorne, age 87 of Autumn House East Assisted Living in York, PA died Monday, January 5, 2009 at York Memorial Hospital. She was born October 24, 1921 in Ishpeming, Michigan the daughter of the late John J. and Mary Ann Hancock Schaffer. She was the wife of the late Robert L. Polkinghorne. She was a former resident of Westminster for 30 years. She was a member of Ascension Episcopal Church in Westminster. She graduated with a B.S. in 1972 from Northern Michigan University. She was a children’s librarian at Carnegie Public Library and taught English at NICE Community Schools in Ishpeming. She was a substitute teacher in the Carroll County Schools. She was devoted to her and her sister’s family. Her hobbies included knitting, reading, poetry, bowling and golfing. She loved visiting her native Upper Michigan.
She is survived by children and spouses, Thomas S.and Nancy Polkinghorne of Champion, Mich; William R. and Sharon Polk of Tucson, Ariz, and James L. and Christina Polkinghorne of York, PA; grandchildren and spouses, Steven and Elizabeth Polkinghorne, Emily Polkinghorne, Amethyst Polk, James and Julie Polkinghorne, Abigail Polkinghorne, Elisabeth Polkinghorne, Esther Ruth Polkinghorne and Mary Anna Polkinghorne; great granddaughter, LaTisha Polkinghorne; also many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son Robert E. Polkinghorne in 1966 who was killed in the line of duty in Vietnam War. Also, predeceased by siblings, Elizabeth Johnson, Helen Kutchie, Charles, Francis and John Schaffer.
A funeral service will be held Monday 8:00 pm at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis Street, Westminster with Rev. Ronald S. Fisher officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm until time of service at the funeral home.
A funeral service will be held on Friday at Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming, Michigan with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held in Ishpeming Cemetery.
