Taneytown

Arthur L. Penchansky, Ph.D., 81, of Taneytown, MD and Marietta, GA passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis following a long illness.

He was born on October 2, 1937 and raised in Bayonne, NJ son of the late Jack and Lillian Smukler Penchansky.

Mr. Penchansky left high school to enter the Army during the Korean Conflict in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1957.  He received qualification for and entered Wagner College in Staten Island, NY in 1959 and was a tackle on the 1960 football team that was the first in the school’s history.  He continued playing for professional and semi-professional football teams until injured in 1963.  After graduation he taught math and economics in the NY City school system for 2 years and then joined Texaco as a computer programmer.  Following this he became a consultant to Pye Co. in England and also the U.S. Department of Energy as Senior Consultant to the Nuclear Waste Program.  After retiring from consulting, Mr. Penchansky became Vice President of Corporate Information for Great American Management and Investment Co. in Atlanta, GA.  He returned to the classroom at Century University in Albuquerque, NM and earned his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Economics and Business Management.  His final position was Director of the Northeast Region for the largest trade newspaper in the HVAC industry.

He was married to the former Marion Hunt Hays who passed away in 2013, and is survived by step-children Dennis Hays and wife Mary Jean of McDonough, GA, Beau Hays of Tucker, GA, and John Hays and wife Robin of Alexandria, VA; and step-daughter, Marilyn Hays of Durham, NC.  He is also survived by 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and various nephews and nieces.  He was predeceased by a sister, Sheila, in 2012.

Graveside services will be private in Riverside Cemetery in Macon, GA where he will be inurned next to his wife.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME in Taneytown, MD.
