Alice "Ginny" Virginia (Gerhold) Giersch

Alice Virginia “Ginny” Giersch, age 94, of Westminster, Maryland, died peacefully on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Brinton Woods Health Care Center in Sykesville.
Born on September 24, 1919 in Baltimore, Maryland, she was daughter of the late George and Alice (Sudsberg) Gerhold.  She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Arthur Giersch on October 19, 2002.
Ginny was a communicant of St. John Catholic Church in Westminster, and had been an active resident for the past 7 years at Westminster Ridge until her recent illness.  She loved card games especially, Bridge and 500 Rummy, and enjoyed watching all sports especially golf.  She was an avid seamstress and loved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and family.
Surviving are daughter, Beverly Ann Backof and husband George of Westminster; son, Michael G. Giersch and wife Dorothy of Ridgefield, CT.; grandchildren, Michael George Backof and wife Jennifer of Westminster, Julie Diane Boden and husband Matthew of Hampstead, Matthew Daniel Backof and wife Rebekah of Eden, Cynthia Alice Myers and husband E. Alex of Westminster, Elizabeth Alice Giersch of N.Y., N.Y., Meredith Emily Giersch of Denver, CO, and Christopher Henry Giersch of Boulder, CO; great-grandchildren, Caitlin Boden, Emily and Aiden Backof, Charles and Lydia Myers, Lilyan, Noah, and Chloe Backof.
She was predeceased by her grandson, Daniel Thomas Backof in 1978; and by a brother, George Gerhold.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, where a Christian Wake Service will begin at 4:30 p.m. with Deacon Mark E. Ripper officiating.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 10, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster, with Rev. Monsignor James P. Farmer as celebrant.  Interment will follow in Gardens of Faith Memorial Gardens in Baltimore.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA  22312.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Westminster.
