Alfred Eric Aldred, 94, of Taneytown died Friday, February 15, 2014 at Golden Crest Assisted Living in Hampstead. Born December 30, 1919 in San Francisco, he was the son of the late Alfred and Emma Johnson Aldred. He was the husband of the late Ethel VonWerne Aldred to whom he was married for 60 years.
Alfred attended both New York and Columbia Universities in New York City. After working in the banking industry, he became a merchandise manager working in clothing imports. While employed by J.C. Penney Department Stores, he developed and supervised their Quality Control Department. He went into business for himself thereafter, developing contacts in many parts of the world, including Central and South America, where he learned to speak fluent Spanish. Alfred was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard and a member of the American Legion Post in Glen Head, New York. He was formerly a member and past treasurer of the Taneytown Senior Center. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown. Alfred traveled extensively, visiting and working in more than 25 countries, including Japan, Portugal, and Hong Kong, which were three of his favorites. His many hobbies included collecting, cutting, and polishing gems and minerals, creating oil paintings and pastels, reading, boating, fishing, raising tropical fish, and solving NY Times crossword puzzles.
Surviving are son, Robert Aldred and wife Rebecca of Charlottesville, VA; daughter, Jane McKenzie and husband Bill of Taneytown; son, Dr. Bruce Aldred and wife Dr. Eve Aldred of Lewes, DE; 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Delores Aldred.
A memorial service will be held at a later time. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 38 W.
