Aileen Elizabeth Foley died on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at St. Catherine’s Nursing Center in Emmitsburg, MD. She was preceded in death by parents, sister Mary A. Foley, and brothers John D. (Jack) Foley and Rev. Joseph R. Foley, C.S.P. She is survived by her dear friends Lena Gugliuzza and Dorothy Corbin, nephew Daniel J. Foley, California, nieces Rosemary Foley and Kathleen Foley, Minneapolis, and cousins Patricia Boran, Minneapolis, Edward Foley, Chicago, and Rev. William O’Donnell, OMI, Wash. D.C.
Born in Minneapolis, MN June 5, 1917 to Timothy and Rose (McDermott) Foley, she attended St. Lawrence Catholic Church and school and graduated from John Marshall High School in Minneapolis. She attended the University of MN and worked for BlueCross Blue Shield of North Dakota. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. She was stationed in Florida at the Naval Gunnery School and then sent to the Naval Air Station in Hawaii where she taught anti-aircraft gunnery during the war. She was discharged from the Navy in 1945 and returned to the University of MN where she completed a B.A. in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Hospital Administration. Following an internship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, she was appointed to the administrative staff in 1948. She was the first woman to serve in an administrative position at JHH. She was hired as Hospital Administrator of the new Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore in 1967, serving until her retirement in 1973. She moved to Carroll Valley, PA where she attended St. Joseph Catholic Church, Emmitsburg, MD, volunteered at the Emmitsburg food bank, and served on the Carroll Valley Borough Planning Commission 1988-2000. Aileen enjoyed building and landscaping her home in Carroll Valley, and she was an avid reader and an accomplished golfer.

A Memorial Mass to celebrate the life of Aileen Foley will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Emmitsburg, MD.
